X-ray safety systems

Integrated safety systems to IRR99

Electron-X designs, manufactures and installs integrated safety solutions to meet the requirements of IRR99 for warnings, interlocks and shielding. Systems can include fail-safe warning lights, trapped key interlocks, multiple source management and other features such as safe edges (on motorised doors).

Safe, reliable technology

Electron-X will carry out a detailed risk assessment prior to specifying a safety system to ensure that all aspects of installation, operation and maintenance are considered in the design. Safety systems are designed and built to comply with the current IEE wiring regulations and can easily be incorporated into a customer's existing electrical system.

Martin Baker

A typical X-ray enclosure with dual X-ray sources would have a specification similar to the following:

  • Wall mounted interface unit with controls for isolation, source selection and connection to external devices.
  • Safety-relay monitored emergency stops inside and outside the enclosure.
  • Safety-relay monitored door interlock switches.
  • 3-stage warning lamp unit with lamp-fail interlock facility.
  • Optional link to motorised door.
  • Optional radiation detector to provide additional monitoring of dose levels

Typical safety system specification

Reliability is an important factor in all safety situations and Electron-X uses only tried and tested components from trusted suppliers in its safety systems. During commissioning, tests are carried out to ensure that the safety system complies with the relevant regulations and that its self-monitoring and fail-to-safety circuits are robust and operating correctly.

As a separate service, Electron-X provides radiation safety training for users and suppliers of X-ray cabinet systems to comply with the requirements of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999.

We are also fully qualified to provide detailed radiation safety audits and risk assessments. Please contact us to find out more.
